(1) Epiphenomenalism
(Causal Closure of the Physical):
- Some philosophers maintain that “Ought implies can," meaning that if an agent has an obligation to perform a certain action, then the agent must be able to perform that action (25%).
(1) Explain the reasons in favor of this position. (5%)
(2) Explain the reasons against it. (10%)
(3) Evaluate the force of the arguments on both sides and present your own considered view. (10%)

- Translate the following passage into fluent Chinese (25%).
Both Mencius and Xunzi wholeheartedly agreed that a moral-political actor sometimes has to bend the rules of ritual (or any rule)
in order to safeguard or uphold the Way, but in doing so he neither does genuine wrongdoing (and compromises his moral
integrity) nor undergoes guilt-generating inner struggles. In their judgment, the hallmark of the sage as the paragon of moral
character was his ability to make timely and effortless adaptations to changing situations. Since there is only "one Way," they
concurred, there could be no differentiation of virtue into moral and political virtues, and since the political was given no
privileged status but rather extended from the ethical, even when the expedient measure (quan 權) was required to cope with the
politically critical moment, it was only to achieve the Way, never to bend the Way itself.

- 核心概念: 禮 (ritual)、規則 (rule)、道 (the Way)、道德政治行動者 (moral-political actor)、作弊/錯誤行為 (wrongdoing)、道德誠信 (moral integrity)、內疚 (guilt)、聖人 (sage)、道德典範 (paragon of moral character)、適時且毫不費力的適應 (timely and effortless adaptations)、情勢變化 (changing situations)、一體化的道 (one Way)、道德美德與政治美德的區分 (differentiation of virtue into moral and political virtues)、政治的優先地位 (privileged status)、倫理 (ethical)、權宜之計 (expedient measure, quan 權)、政治關鍵時刻 (politically critical moment)。
-
"Both Mencius and Xunzi wholeheartedly agreed that a moral-political actor sometimes has to bend the rules of ritual (or any rule) in order to safeguard or uphold the Way,"
-
"but in doing so he neither does genuine wrongdoing (and compromises his moral integrity) nor undergoes guilt-generating inner struggles."
- Read the following passages and answer the questions below in Chinese (25%).
The term "philosophy" has roots in ancient Greece, and philosophers in the subsequent Western tradition have been aware of
themselves as philosophers. Boethius wrote about "The Consolations of Philosophy," Aquinas about the distinction between
philosophy and theology, and Nietzsche about the prejudices of philosophers. The same cannot be said for the most prominent
thinkers in non-Western traditions. In East Asia, for instance, the term did not become widely known until the late nineteenth
century, and new words were coined in Japanese and Chinese to translate it. Given that well-known thinkers from other
cultures---Confucius, Laozi, the Buddha, etc. had not heard of the term "philosophy" and did not think of themselves as
"philosophers," does it make sense to apply the term to them? Is "non-Western philosophy" a legitimate category?
The view that there is no such thing as non-Western philosophy arises from two main sources. On the one hand, some Western
philosophers have claimed that non-Western thought does not rise to the level of philosophy. On the other, many outside the West
have been skeptical of the attempt to make a Western cultural product the standard for the rest of the world. What both sides share
in common is the idea that there is something problematic about extending philosophy to non-Western contexts. In their view, the
word "Western" in "Western philosophy" is redundant because philosophy is inherently Western. It makes no sense to speak of
"African philosophy, "Chinese philosophy," and the like.
If we have studied the great philosophers in the Western tradition, we may be under the impression that philosophy is something
universal. When Socrates says that "The unexamined life is not worth living," or Aristotle that "All human beings by nature
desire to know," these claims have implications that go beyond a certain sector of the Greek population circa the fifth and fourth
centuries BCE. Why should they be relevant only in certain parts of the Western hemisphere? Isn't there something terribly biased
about thinking that the ideal of the examined life does not apply to people living in other parts of the world?
Questions:
(1) According to the passage, why is the application of the term "philosophy" to non-Western thinkers considered problematic by
some? Identify the main reasons discussed. (10%)
(2) How does the author challenge the assumption that philosophy is inherently Western? How might this challenge affect our
understanding of Chinese philosophy as a field of study? (15%)

- 以抽象概念進行思考;
- 透過理性論證支持主張;
- 對知識、存在、道德等根本問題進行系統性探究;
- 西方思想被視為具有普遍性;
