The scholar not only reconciled the ____ experience and theoretical underpinnings for his research, but also conducted interviews himself with commendable ____, even when confronting unseemly outbursts from some of the interviewees.
A. philosophical; pertinacity
B. arcane; adroitness
C. superficial; alacrity
D. obtuse; presence of mind
E. empirical; propriety
empirical experience and theoretical underpinnings
面對受訪者的 unseemly outbursts(不得體的爆發),最適合的反應是保持 propriety(得體、合宜的行為)。
A. philosophical; pertinacity
B. arcane; adroitness
C. superficial; alacrity
The teacher liked students to learn self-discipline and seldom ____ them, even when they really deserved chastisement. However, her adherence to outdated teaching ideas limited their ____ opportunities to become creative thinkers.
A. rewarded; vacillating
B. consoled; sectarian
C. upbraided; intransigent
D. applauded; confused
E. cherished; frantic
even when they really deserved chastisement
adherence to outdated teaching ideas
A. rewarded; vacillating
B. consoled; sectarian
The speaker, who ____ long-windedness in his speech and attempted to elucidate a complex moral dilemma by simplifying it to a single ridiculous example, seemed rather to ____ the content of his argument.
A. eschewed; obfuscate
B. epitomized; denigrate
C. accentuated; over-simplify
D. embraced; becloud
E. welcomed; attenuate

A. eschewed; obfuscate
B. embraced; denigrate
C. accentuated; over-simplify
If he had had the ____ to pursue the iconoclastic theories and not maintained the abiding style of writing, the ____ of his work would not have run to anything even remotely literary.
A. incentive; successes
B. incapacity; backgrounds
C. unwillingness ; achievements
D. audacity; inclinations
E. wisdom; amities
第二格位於 the ____ of his work would not have run to anything literary 中,需填入可表示「作品的傾向或方向」的名詞。
audacity; inclinations。
A. incentive; successes
have the incentive to pursue文法上可以成立,但句意是「有動機去追求」,不如題目所需的「有膽量挑戰反傳統理論」精確。 the successes of his work would run to...
B. incapacity; backgrounds
Even though the novel is definitely not the finest example of its genre, the ____ preface by a renowned expert on literary thrillers seems ____ attempt to spoil the author's work, without rendering so much as one or two perceptive comments.
A. egregious; salubrious
B. vacuous; malicious
C. pretentious; naive
D. subliminal; saturnine
E. unexamined; innocuous

For the last 82 years, Sweden's Nobel Academy has decided who will receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, thereby determining who will be elevated from the great and the near-great to the immortal. But today, the Academy is coming under heavy criticism both from without and from within. Critics contend that the selection of the winners often has less to do with true writing ability than with the peculiar internal politics of the Academy and of Sweden itself. According to Ingmar Bjorksten, the cultural editor for one of the country's two major newspapers, the prize continues to represent "what people call a very Swedish exercise: reflecting Swedish tastes."
The Academy has defended itself against such charges of provincialism in its selection by asserting that its physical distance from the great literary capitals of the world actually serves to protect the Academy from outside influences. This may well be true, but critics respond that this very distance may also be responsible for the Academy's inability to perceive accurately authentic trends in the literary world.
Regardless of concerns over the selection process, however, it seems that the prize will continue to survive both as an indicator of the literature that we most highly praise and as an elusive goal that writers seek. If for no other reason, the prize will continue to be desirable for the financial rewards that accompany it; not only is the cash prize itself considerable, but it also dramatically increases sales of an author's books.
With which of the following subjects is the passage mainly concerned?
(A) The selection process of the Academy.
(B) The Academy's favorite works of literature.
(C) Recent choices of the Academy.
(D) The authors who deserve to be recognized by the Academy.
- (A) The selection process of the Academy.
According to the passage, who has criticized the Nobel Academy?
(A) Swedes.
(B) Both members and non-members of the Academy.
(C) Alfred Nobel, the founder of the Nobel Academy.
(D) Rejected candidates for the Nobel prize.
- (A) Swedes.
- (B) Both members and non-members of the Academy.
According to the passage, critics of the Academy's selection process hold that it ____.
(A) is influenced by authentic trends in the literary world
(B) does not reflect Swedish tastes and culture
(C) is influenced by criteria other than the quality of the writer's work
(D) only considers a limited pool of authors
According to the passage, how has the Academy responded to its critics?
(A) It has sent critics a compilation of works by recent prize winners.
(B) It has disregarded all criticism of the selection process.
(C) It has been suggested that Sweden's independence from the world trends is an advantage to the selection process.
(D) It has published strong editorials in its own defense.
It can be inferred from the passage that Sweden ____.
(A) boasts one of the world's most literate populations
(B) is not one of the great literary capitals of the world
(C) has only two newspapers
(D) is one of the world's richest nations
- (A) boasts one of the world's most literate populations:
According to the passage, the Nobel Prize in literature is sought after for all of the following reasons EXCEPT ____.
(A) the controversy surrounding the selection process
(B) its large cash reward
(C) its effect on book sales
(D) its effect in enhancing an author's stature
The passage supports which of the following conclusions?
(A) Until recently, the Academy has never been criticized.
(B) The Nobel Prize is the only award that can confer greatness on an author.
(C) Some people believe the Academy misunderstands current developments in the world of literature.
(D) Many critics would like to do away with the Academy entirely.
-
(A) Until recently, the Academy has never been criticized.

What prevented Chinese characters from becoming identified entirely with sound was the practice that Chinese evolved of attaching to these sound-bearing or "phonetic" elements other characters chosen for their semantic value, eventually forcing the two into the same squarish frame. The result was an entirely new character, distinct from all other characters having the same phonetic element and read in the same or a similar way.
