With the spread of English as a lingua franca (ELF), English has become the dominant language in
international conferences where simultaneous interpreting is usually provided. In other words, interpreters
often need to interpret for non-native speakers of English. Please answer the following four questions:
(1) What are the challenges, or problem triggers, for interpreters when interpreting for non-native speakers
in simultaneous mode?
(2) What strategies can interpreters use to deal with these problem triggers at the time of interpreting?
(3) What preparation can interpreters make prior to the conferences featuring non-native keynote speakers
and panelists?
(4) What might be the possible impact of ELF on the interpreting industry as a whole?

(English as a Lingua Franca, ELF)」對同步口譯(Simultaneous Interpreting, SI)**的衝擊與實務因應。
(Problem Triggers):
(Coping Strategies):
(Pre-process Preparation):
(Sociology of Interpreting & Professional Status):
- 第一子題(挑戰):從語音(Phonology/Prosody)、句法語義(Syntax/Lexis)、以及認知處理精力(Cognitive Load/Gile's Model)切入。
The ascendancy of English as a lingua franca (ELF) has transformed the landscape of international communication, reshaping the working environment of conference interpreters. In contemporary multilateral arenas, interpreters are increasingly called upon to render speeches delivered by non-native speakers (NNS) whose linguistic output deviates significantly from standard varieties of English. This pedagogical analysis examines the cognitive and operational ramifications of ELF in simultaneous interpreting, detailing the specific problem triggers, real-time coping strategies, preparatory protocols, and the macro-level impact on the profession.
When interpreting for non-native speakers in the simultaneous mode, interpreters encounter multifaceted challenges that drastically elevate cognitive load. Within the conceptual framework of Daniel Gile’s Effort Model, non-native input imposes an exorbitant demand on the Listening and Analysis Effort (), frequently threatening cognitive equilibrium. The primary problem triggers originate at the phonetic and prosodic levels. Non-native speakers often exhibit non-standard phonemic realisations, aberrant stress placement, and atypical intonation contours, which hinder immediate acoustic decoding and lexical access. At the morphosyntactic and lexical levels, speakers may display anomalous syntactic structures, false friends, idiosyncratic idioms, or ungrammatical calques transferred from their primary language (). Furthermore, the temporal delivery of NNS is notoriously unpredictable; irregular delivery rates, unnatural pausing, or dysfluencies obstruct the interpreter’s anticipation mechanism. Consequently, interpreters must allocate disproportionate processing capacity simply to parse the surface structure, which depletes the cognitive reserves necessary for the Memory Effort () and Production Effort (), thereby precipitating errors, processing saturation, and ear-voice lag breakdown.
To counteract these operational bottlenecks in real time, interpreters must deploy a flexible repertoire of emergency and processing tactics. The cornerstone of coping with non-native input is dynamic adjustment of the Ear-Voice Span (EVS). When a speaker’s syntax becomes convoluted or unpredictable, interpreters typically prolong the EVS to wait for sufficient semantic resolution; conversely, if memory overload looms, the interpreter must shorten the lag by applying the "salami technique" or syntactic chunking—segmenting complex, irregular utterances into crisp, logically coherent target sentences. On the conceptual plane, interpreters should detach from the defective surface forms and practice radical deverbalization, capturing the underlying communicative intention rather than mirroring idiosyncratic phraseology. When ambiguous phrasing or low redundancy compromises comprehensibility, interpreters may resort to semantic generalization or

(Aspects of Interpreting Quality):
-
(Accuracy):
-
(Completeness):
(Fluency and Naturalness):
(Timeliness and Punctuality):
(Appropriateness and Adaptability):
(Professional Ethics and Confidentiality):
(Auditory Comprehension):
