(I-1) Specific Language Impairment (SLI)
(I-2) Entailment
(I-3) Suprasegmental Features

(Contrastive Distribution):
(Phonological Rules):
(Distributional Analysis)
(Preceding Environment) |
|---|---|---|---|
kola 'do'<br>buulira 'tell'<br>luula 'sit'<br>omugole 'bride'<br>lumonde 'sweet potato'<br>eddwaliro 'hospital'<br>oluganda 'Ganda language'<br>olulimi 'tongue'<br>wulira 'hear'<br>omuliro 'fire'<br>lagira 'command' | o__a<br>uu__i<br>#_u, uu__a<br>o__e<br>#_u<br>a__i<br>o__u<br>o__u, u__i<br>u__i<br>u__i<br>#_a | 1.
wulira 'hear'<br>beera 'help'<br>buulira 'tell'<br>jukira 'remember'<br>erjato 'canoe'<br>omuliro 'fire'<br>effirimbi 'whistle'<br>emmeeri 'ship'<br>eraddu 'lightning'<br>eddwaliro 'hospital'<br>wawaabira 'accuse'<br>lagira 'command' | i__a<br>ee__a<br>i__a<br>i__a<br>e__j<br>i__o<br>i__i<br>ee__i<br>e__a<br>i__o<br>i__a<br>i__a | 前母音之後(Preceded by front vowels):(含長母音 ) |
(Preceding environment):
(Allophones of the same phoneme)。
(List the phonological environment)
| [l] | [r] | |
|---|---|---|
| V__V | o__a, u__i, u__a, o__e, a__i, o__u<br>(概括特徵:前接非前母音 ) | i__a, e__a, i__o, i__i, e__i<br>(概括特徵:前接前母音 ) |
第 (III) 題30 分
(III) Unlike traditional linguistic approaches that focus primarily on spoken or written language, many researchers acknowledge the importance of integrated information from various modalities, including pictures, gestures, facial expressions, and other non-verbal cues that accompany language. Zima (2017) studied the accompanying gestures with different functions of "all the way from X + PREP +Y." Read the examples below and answer the questions that follow. (30%)
(III-1). Zima (2017) found the construction has at least 4 functions, as shown in Table 1 below. Which function(s) is/are literal? Which are metaphorical? Justify your answer. (10%)
Table 1. Functions of the "all the way from X + PREP +Y" construction
| Functions | Explanation | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| (1) Area | the size/range of an area | the land spans all the way from Seattle through Oregon |
| (2) Distance | the distance travelled | the food is delivered all the way from Long Beach to Lancaster |
| (3) Development in time | duration or phase | every single child in this nation has a world-class education all the way from preschool to college |
| (4) List/spectrum | a range of choices or options | there was a whole system going on all the way from the borrower to the investor |
(III-2). Zima (2017) studied the accompanying gestures with this construction, and the result is shown in Table 2. What are the factors (or independent variables) that determine the use of accompanying gestures? (5%)
Table 2. Frequency gestures accompanying the "all the way from X + PREP +Y" construction
| [all the way from X PREP Y] | + gesture | Øgesture |
|---|---|---|
| area | 110 | 18 |
| distance | 40 | 7 |
| development in time | 5 | 4 |
| list/spectrum | 5 | 36 |
| total | 160 | 65 |
(III-3). Write a paragraph in 150 words to describe the findings based on this table. (15%)

(III-1). Literal vs. Metaphorical Functions
-
-
分析 Table 1:
- (1) Area (範圍): 「the land spans all the way from Seattle through Oregon」。這裡的「all the way from... to...」
- (2) Distance (距離): 「the food is delivered all the way from Long Beach to Lancaster」。這裡的「all the way from... to...」
- (3) Development in time (時間發展): 「every single child in this nation has a world-class education all the way from preschool to college」。這裡的「all the way from... to...」 將時間的持續度描述為「all the way from... to...」
- (4) List/spectrum (列表/範圍): 「there was a whole system going on all the way from the borrower to the investor」。這裡的「all the way from... to...」
- 隱喻功能: (3) Development in time 和 (4) List/spectrum。
- 隱喻功能: (3) Development in time 和 (4) List/spectrum。
(III-2). Factors Determining Use of Gestures
(Area, Distance, Development in time, List/spectrum)。
第 (IV) 題20 分
(IV) Observe the two advertisements below containing foul languages. Answer the questions that follow. (20%)
Figure 1. An ad for a beef restaurant
YOU ARE IN CATTLE COUNTRY
EAT BEEF YOU
BASTARDS
Figure 2. An ad for meatless burgers
NOW THAT'S A
M... F.
BURGER!
MEATLESS
FARM
(IV-1) Swear words, or profanity, are typically avoided in the service business because customers are supposed to be treated with respect. Explain why the advertisers used foul language in these two ads. Theories in pragmatics and sociolinguistics (e.g., politeness, indexicality, covert prestige, etc.) may help, and social factors such as gender, age, economy, and power may also influence choice of words. Your ability to use specialized terminology in the explanation is appreciated. (10%)
(IV-2) The two advertisements are situated in the US. Would employing the same strategy be effective in ads in different countries? Use your own country as an example. Justify your response by highlighting the norms and values which demonstrate communicative competence in your country. (10%)

(IV-1). Rationale for Using Foul Language in Ads
- Figure 1 (Beef Restaurant): "YOU ARE IN CATTLE COUNTRY EAT BEEF YOU BASTARDS"
- 「CATTLE COUNTRY」:
- Figure 2 (Meatless Burgers): "NOW THAT'S A M... F. BURGER! MEATLESS FARM"
- 「MEATLESS FARM」:
- Figure 1 (Beef Restaurant): "YOU ARE IN CATTLE COUNTRY EAT BEEF YOU BASTARDS"
(Indexicality):
