Read the following text.

By means of outer sense, a property of our mind, we represent to ourselves objects as outside us, and all without exception in space. What, then, are space and time? Are they real existences? Are they only determinations or relations of things, yet such as would belong to things even if they were not intuited? Or are space and time such that they belong only to the form of intuition, and therefore to the subjective constitution of our mind, apart from which they could not be ascribed to anything whatsoever? ...

  1. Space is not an empirical concept which has been derived from outer experiences. For in order that certain sensations be referred to something outside me (that is, to something in another region of space from that in which I find myself), and similarly in order that I may be able to represent them as outside and alongside one another, and accordingly as not only different but as in different places, the representation of space must be presupposed. The representation of space cannot, therefore, be empirically obtained from the relations of outer appearance. On the contrary, this outer experience is itself possible at all only through that representation.

(Immanuel Kant, Critique of Pure Reason, A 23-24, translated by Kemp Smith.)

(a) Explain the first paragraph, especially the first sentence.
(b) Kant in the end concludes that space is "subjective" and not a property of things in themselves. He gives four arguments for this. The paragraph "Space is not an empirical concept..." gives his first argument. What do you think about this argument, and what do you think about his conclusion that space is "subjective" and not a property of things in themselves?

  • 第一句話:「By means of outer sense, a property of our mind, we represent to ourselves objects as outside us, and all without exception in space.」

    2. 事物的決定或關係(determinations or relations of things)。
    3. 即使未被直觀也屬於事物本身的屬性(belong to things even if they were not intuited)。
    4. 僅僅是直觀的形式,屬於心靈的主觀構成(belong only to the form of intuition, and therefore to the subjective constitution of our mind)。

    「Space is not an empirical concept which has been derived from outer experiences. On the contrary, this outer experience is itself possible at all only through that representation.」

Read the following text.

In the Cartesian, Hobbesian, and Lockean traditions, which dominate our culture, we are told that when we are conscious, we are primarily aware of ourselves or our own ideas. Consciousness is taken to be like a bubble or an enclosed cabinet; the mind comes in a box. Impressions and concepts occur in this enclosed space, in this circle of ideas and experiences, and our awareness is directed toward them, not directly toward the things "outside."... This understanding of human awareness is reinforced by what we know about the brain and nervous system. It seems unquestionable that everything cognitional must happen "inside the head," and that all we could possibly be in touch with directly are our own brain states.... We know instinctively that we are not trapped in our own subjectivity, we are sure that we do go beyond our brains and our internal mental states, but we do not know how to justify this conviction. We do not know how to show that our contact with the "real world" is not an illusion, not a mere subjective projection. For the most part we have no idea how we ever get outside ourselves, and we probably treat this issue simply by ignoring it and hoping that no one will ask us about it. When we try to think about human consciousness, we start with the premise that we are entirely "inside," and we are greatly perplexed as to how we could ever get "outside."

(Robert Sokolowski, Introduction to Phenomenology, CUP 2000, pp. 9-10.)

(a) Briefly summarize and explain the passage.
(b) What do you think about this "inside-outside" problem?

(1) Albert, who is a student, will talk to Barbara, only if he talks to someone who is not a student.
(a: Albert; b: Barbara; Txy: x talks to y; Sx: x is a student;)

(2) If a bear eats some honey, then it will sleep a lot.
(Bx: x is a bear; Ex: x eats some honey; Sx: x sleeps a lot)

(3) If Socrates meets Confucius, then all philosophers will be happy.
(s: Socrates; c: Confucius; Mxy: x meets y; Px: x is a philosopher; Hx: x will be happy)

(4) Every cat scares a dog.
(Cx: x is a cat; Sxy: x scares y; Dx: x is a dog)

(5) Every even number is greater than both an odd number and an even number.
(Ex: x is an even number; Gxy: x is greater than y; Ox: x is an odd number)

(Relational Predicates & Individual Constants):
  2. 條件句連接詞的語意辨析(p only if qp \text{ only if } q):
    英文中的「p only if qp \text{ only if } q」(僅當 qq 時,pp)表達「qq 是 pp 的必要條件」,其邏輯結構為:
    p→qp \to q
    不可與「p if qp \text{ if } q」(若 qq 則 pp,即 q→pq \to p)混淆。
(Scope Ambiguity):

Albert, who is a student, will talk to Barbara, only if he talks to someone who is not a student.
  • 字典:aa: Albert; bb: Barbara; TxyTxy: xx talks to yy; SxSx: xx is a student
      • 非限定關係子句「Albert, who is a student, will talk to Barbara」:表明 Albert 本身是學生(SaSa),且在特定條件下會與 Barbara 交談(TabTab)。
      • 條件關係「... will talk to Barbara, only if he talks to someone who is not a student」:屬於「p only if qp \text{ only if } q」句型,等價於 p→qp \to q。
        • 前件 pp:Albert will talk to Barbara(TabTab)。
        • 後件 qq:Albert talks to someone who is not a student。
      ∃x(¬Sx∧Tax)\exists x (\neg Sx \land Tax)
      Sa∧(Tab→∃x(¬Sx∧Tax))Sa \land (Tab \to \exists x (\neg Sx \land Tax))
      (註:若依緊密修飾結構將前件視為整體 (Sa∧Tab)(Sa \land Tab),則為 (Sa∧Tab)→∃x(¬Sx∧Tax)(Sa \land Tab) \to \exists x (\neg Sx \land Tax);但在標準英文語法中,插入語「, who is a student,」代表說話者肯定 SaSa 之真實性,故以合取形式最為精確標準。)

If a bear eats some honey, then it will sleep a lot.
BxBx: xx is a bear; ExEx: xx eats some honey; SxSx: xx sleeps a lot
      ∀x((Bx∧Ex)→Sx)\forall x ((Bx \land Ex) \to Sx)

If Socrates meets Confucius, then all philosophers will be happy.
  • 字典:ss: Socrates; cc: Confucius; MxyMxy: xx meets y; PxPx: xx is a philosopher; HxHx: xx will be happy

  • 全稱例示(UI):由 (∀x)φ(x)(\forall x)\varphi(x),可得任意個體的 φ(a)\varphi(a)。
  • 存在例示(EI):由 (∃x)φ(x)(\exists x)\varphi(x),引入一個新的個體常項 aa,暫設 φ(a)\varphi(a)。
  • 存在概括(EG):由 φ(a)\varphi(a),推出 (∃x)φ(x)(\exists x)\varphi(x)。

(1)證明 (∃x)Gx(\exists x)Gx

前提:

(∀x)(Fx⊃Gx)(\forall x)(Fx \supset Gx) (∃x)Fx(\exists x)Fx

目標:

(∃x)Gx(\exists x)Gx

  1. (∀x)(Fx⊃Gx)(\forall x)(Fx \supset Gx) 前提
  2. (∃x)Fx(\exists x)Fx 前提
  3. FaFa 假設,EI,由 2
  4. Fa⊃GaFa \supset Ga UI,由 1
  5. GaGa MP,由 3、4
  6. (∃x)Gx(\exists x)Gx EG,由 5

(∀x)(Fx⊃Gx),  (∃x)Fx⊢(∃x)Gx(\forall x)(Fx \supset Gx),\;(\exists x)Fx \vdash (\exists x)Gx

(∀x)(Hx⊃(Fx⊃Gx))(\forall x)(Hx \supset (Fx \supset Gx)) (∃x)Hx(\exists x)Hx (∃x)(¬Gx)(\exists x)(\neg Gx)

目標:

(∃x)(¬Hx)(\exists x)(\neg Hx)

HaHa

¬Gb\neg Gb

Ha,  ¬GaHa,\;\neg Ga

Ha⊃(Fa⊃Ga)Ha \supset (Fa \supset Ga)

Ha 為真,Fa 為假,Ga 為假Ha \text{ 為真},\qquad Fa \text{ 為假},\qquad Ga \text{ 為假}

(∀x)(Hx⊃(Fx⊃Gx))(\forall x)(Hx \supset (Fx \supset Gx)) (∃x)Hx(\exists x)Hx (∃x)(¬Gx)(\exists x)(\neg Gx)

目標:

(∃x)(¬Hx)(\exists x)(\neg Hx)

HaHa

¬Gb\neg Gb

Ha,  ¬GaHa,\;\neg Ga

Ha⊃(Fa⊃Ga)Ha \supset (Fa \supset Ga)

Ha 為真,Fa 為假,Ga 為假Ha \text{ 為真},\qquad Fa \text{ 為假},\qquad Ga \text{ 為假}

A=BA = B 表示 A↔BA \leftrightarrow B 是邏輯真理。

(1) ((3x)Fx⊃(y)Gy)((3x)Fx \supset (y)Gy) = (x)(FxGx)(x)(FxGx) is a logical truth.

    左邊:(∃x)Fx→(∀y)Gy(\exists x)Fx \rightarrow (\forall y)Gy
    右邊:(∀x)(Fx→Gx)(\forall x)(Fx \rightarrow Gx)

例如,考慮一個論域 {a,b}\{a, b\}。令 F={a}F = \{a\},G={a,b}G = \{a, b\}。
F={a}F = \{a\},G={a}G = \{a\}。
    (∃x)Fx(\exists x)Fx 為真。
    (∀y)Gy(\forall y)Gy 為真。
F={a}F = \{a\},G={b}G = \{b\}。
    (∃x)Fx(\exists x)Fx 為真。

F={a}F = \{a\},G={b}G = \{b\}。
    則 (∀x)(Fx→Gx)(\forall x)(Fx \rightarrow Gx) 為假(因為對於 x=ax=a,FaFa 為真但 GaGa 為假)。

    考慮一個論域 {a,b}\{a, b\}。
    解釋 1:F={a}F = \{a\},G={a}G = \{a\}。
    左邊:(∃x)Fx(\exists x)Fx (T) →(∀y)Gy\rightarrow (\forall y)Gy (T)。 T→TT \rightarrow T 是 T。
    右邊:(∀x)(Fx→Gx)(\forall x)(Fx \rightarrow Gx)。
    x=ax=a: Fa→GaFa \rightarrow Ga (T →\rightarrow T) 是 T。
    x=bx=b: Fb→GbFb \rightarrow Gb (F →\rightarrow F) 是 T。
    右邊是 T。此時兩者等價。

    解釋 2:F={a}F = \{a\},G={b}G = \{b\}。
    左邊:(∃x)Fx(\exists x)Fx (T) →(∀y)Gy\rightarrow (\forall y)Gy (F)。 T→FT \rightarrow F 是 F。
    右邊:(∀x)(Fx→Gx)(\forall x)(Fx \rightarrow Gx)。
    x=ax=a: Fa→GaFa \rightarrow Ga (T →\rightarrow F) 是 F。
    x=bx=b: Fb→GbFb \rightarrow Gb (F →\rightarrow T) 是 T。
    右邊是 F。此時兩者等價。

    解釋 3:F=∅F = \emptyset,G={a,b}G = \{a, b\}。
    左邊:(∃x)Fx(\exists x)Fx (F) →(∀y)Gy\rightarrow (\forall y)Gy (T)。 F→TF \rightarrow T 是 T。
    右邊:(∀x)(Fx→Gx)(\forall x)(Fx \rightarrow Gx)。
    x=ax=a: Fa→GaFa \rightarrow Ga (F →\rightarrow T) 是 T。
    x=bx=b: Fb→GbFb \rightarrow Gb (F →\rightarrow T) 是 T。
    右邊是 T。此時兩者等價。

    解釋 4:F={a,b}F = \{a, b\},G={a}G = \{a\}。
    左邊:(∃x)Fx(\exists x)Fx (T) →(∀y)Gy\rightarrow (\forall y)Gy (F)。 T→FT \rightarrow F 是 F。
    右邊:(∀x)(Fx→Gx)(\forall x)(Fx \rightarrow Gx)。
    x=ax=a: Fa→GaFa \rightarrow Ga (T →\rightarrow T) 是 T。
    x=bx=b: Fb→GbFb \rightarrow Gb (T →\rightarrow F) 是 F。
    右邊是 F。此時兩者等價。
