依敘事語境譯為 would surely 或 would certainly。
可用 as soon as he saw... 或 the moment he saw...。
A-Tsang was riding the large bicycle, his buttocks having to slide from side to side and bounce up and down. A cooked bonito wrapped in wild taro leaves was hanging from the bicycle’s handlebar stem, swaying violently with the motion of the bicycle. A-Tsang knew how happy his grandfather and younger brothers and sisters would be when he brought the fish back up to their mountain home. They would certainly be amazed to learn that he had learned how to ride a bicycle. Besides, riding the bicycle back to the foot of the mountain at Pitou would save him twelve dollars in bus fare for the round trip. That was why A-Tsang had pleaded with the carpenter to lend him the broken bicycle that had been left unused in the storeroom.
Along the way, nothing else occupied A-Tsang’s mind—not even the symphony produced by the various parts of the broken bicycle. He thought only of bringing the fish to his grandfather as quickly as possible. The moment he saw his grandfather, he would hold the fish high in the air and say, “What do you think? My memory isn’t so bad, is it? I’ve brought a fish back!”
was riding the large bicycle
his buttocks having to slide from side to side and bounce up and down
- 「左右」是 from side to side。
a cooked bonito wrapped in wild taro leaves
was hanging from the bicycle’s handlebar stem
how happy his grandfather and younger brothers and sisters would be
She had a horror of snakes and bats, which I hide in pockets and sewing baskets; otherwise she was
entirely fearless. One day I saw a vicious devil of a Corsican, a common terror in the town, chasing his
grown daughter with a heavy rope in his hand, threatening to wear it out on her. Cautious male citizens let
him pass but my mother spread her door wide to the refugee, and then, instead of closing and locking it
after her, stood in it, barring the way. The man swore, cursed, threateatened her with his rope; but she
only stood, straight and fine, and lashed him, shame him, derided, and defied him until he asked her
pardon, gave her his rope and said with a blasphemous oath that she was the bravest woman he ever saw.
He found in her a long felt want-somebody who was not afraid of him. (From Mark Twain This was my
mother)

- "She had a horror of snakes and bats, which I hide in pockets and sewing baskets; otherwise she was entirely fearless."
- "which I hide in pockets and sewing baskets":這裡的 "which" 指代的是 snakes and bats。
- "One day I saw a vicious devil of a Corsican, a common terror in the town, chasing his grown daughter with a heavy rope in his hand, threatening to wear it out on her."

- "Cautious male citizens let him pass but my mother spread her door wide to the refugee, and then, instead of closing and locking it after her, stood in it, barring the way."
- "Cautious male citizens let him pass":
- "my mother spread her door wide to the refugee":我母親打開門,讓(女兒)這位避難者進來。
- "stood in it, barring the way":母親站在門口,擋住了去路。
- "The man swore, cursed, threateatened her with his rope; but she only stood, straight and fine, and lashed him, shame him, derided, and defied him until he asked her pardon, gave her his rope and said with a blasphemous oath that she was the bravest woman he ever saw."

In The Condition of Postmodernity, David Harvey identifies flexibility as the modus operandi of
late capitalism. He distinguishes contemporary systems of profit making, production, distribution, and
consumption as a break from the earlier, Fordist model of centralized mass-assembly production in
which the workers were also the mass consumers of their products. In the era of late capitalism, "the
regime of flexible accumulation" reigns, whether in the realms of business philosophy and high finance
or in production systems, labor markets, and consumption. What is missing from Harvey's account is
human agency and its production and negotiation of cultural meanings within the normative milieus of
late capitalism. More recently, writers on "the information age" maintain that globalization in which
financial markets around the world are unified by information from the electronic-data stream-operates
according to its own logic without a class of managers or capitalists in charge.

- "the regime of flexible accumulation" reigns:「彈性累積的統治」或「彈性積累的模式」盛行。
- realms of business philosophy and high finance or in production systems, labor markets, and consumption:涵蓋商業哲學、金融、生產、勞動市場和消費等各個領域。

Theorists of nationalism have often been perplexed, not to say irritated, by these three paradoxes: (1)
The objective modernity of nations to the historian's eye vs. their subjective antiquity in the eyes of
nationalists. (2) The formal universality of nationality as a socio-cultural concept—in the modern world
everyone can, should, will 'have' a nationality, as he or she 'has' a gender—vs. the irremediable
particularity of its concrete manifestations, such that, by definition, 'Greek' nationality is sui generis. (3)
The 'political' power of nationalisms vs. their philosophical poverty and even incoherence. In other
words, unlike most other isms, nationalism has never produced its own grand thinkers: no Hobbeses,
Tocquevilles, Marxes, or Webers. This 'emptiness' easily gives rise, among cosmopolitan and
polylingual intellectuals, to a certain condescension. Like Gertrude Stein in the face of Oakland, one
can rather quickly conclude that there is 'no there there'. It is characteristic that even so sympathetic a
student of nationalism as Tom Nairn can nonetheless write that: ' "Nationalism" is the pathology of
modern developmental history, as inescapable as "neurosis" in the individual, with much the same
essential ambiguity attaching to it, a similar built-in capacity for descent into dementia, rooted in the
dilemmas of helplessness thrust upon most of the world (the equivalent of infantilism for societies) and
largely incurable.

- Author and Source: Benedict Anderson, Imagined Communities.
- Core Topic: Three paradoxes of nationalism.
- Paradox 1: Objective modernity of nations vs. subjective antiquity.
- Paradox 2: Formal universality of nationality vs. irremediable particularity.
- Paradox 3: Political power of nationalisms vs. philosophical poverty/incoherence.
- Consequence of Paradox 3: Nationalism hasn't produced "grand thinkers" like Hobbes, Marx, etc.
- Intellectual Reaction: Cosmopolitan intellectuals feel condescension ("no there there").
- Tom Nairn's View: Nationalism as a "pathology of modern developmental history," like neurosis, leading to "dementia," rooted in helplessness.
-
"Theorists of nationalism have often been perplexed, not to say irritated, by these three paradoxes:"
-
"(1) The objective modernity of nations to the historian's eye vs. their subjective antiquity in the eyes of nationalists."
-
"(2) The formal universality of nationality as a socio-cultural concept—in the modern world everyone can, should, will 'have' a nationality, as he or she 'has' a gender—vs. the irremediable particularity of its concrete manifestations, such that, by definition, 'Greek' nationality is sui generis."
-
"(3) The 'political' power of nationalisms vs. their philosophical poverty and even incoherence."
-
"In other words, unlike most other isms, nationalism has never produced its own grand thinkers: no Hobbeses, Tocquevilles, Marxes, or Webers."
-
"This 'emptiness' easily gives rise, among cosmopolitan and polylingual intellectuals, to a certain condescension."
- "cosmopolitan and polylingual intellectuals":
-
"Like Gertrude Stein in the face of Oakland, one can rather quickly conclude that there is 'no there there'."
- 翻譯:就像格特魯德·斯坦(Gertrude Stein)面對奧克蘭(Oakland)時所說的,「這裡什麼也沒有」(no there there)。
-
